Karra Shimabukuro

Dr. Karra Shimabukuro’s work analyzes folkloric figures in medieval and early modern literature and popular culture for the ways they are vehicles for the fears, desires, and anxieties of a particular historical and cultural moment, and how this opens new avenues of thinking about, and challenging, well-known texts, genres, and periodizations. Her most recent work analyzes the role of the devil in the culture wars, and his connection to The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ in “The Devil and The Culture Wars: Demonizing Controversy in The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ” in The Bible Onscreen in the New Millennium, 2019.
