Abstract: "'Don’t Put Her Down You Helped Put Her There': Women’s Grassroots Activism in Appalachia Since the 1970s," explores women's participation in grassroots activism. Getting its namesake from Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard's song “Don’t Put Her Down You Helped Put Her There" examines how art, music, and literature are inspired by and inform these movements. From their work on the picket lines, in the coal mines, and on the frontlines of environmental justice movements, women have led and sustained grassroots movements in Appalachia.
