Abstract: The relationships between temperature and topographic variations are examined in a small area of complex terrain located within Watauga County, North Carolina. Temperatures were recorded and heating degree days were computed for an eighty day observation period in late winter and early spring at five sites with different combinations of the physical elements: (1) altitude, (2) aspect, and (3) slope.
