Abstract: In the current investigation, self-esteem was measured by Ss' actual scores on the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. Using a forced compliance essay writing task, evidence of dissonance was found only in the lowest of four levels of self-esteem. Questions about the present research, and implications for the areas of self-concept and cognitive dissonance were discussed.
