Abstract: This study was proposed to develop and field test the validity and reliability of the "Screening Assessment of Communication in Everyday Situations (SACES)," a screening instrument of communicative competence. SACES was derived by principal component factor analysis from the "Assessment of Communication in Everyday Situations." Both instruments are based on Tough's (1977) functional classification system of the cognitive and social uses of language and both use a role playing format.
