Abstract: This descriptive study was designed to yield normative data on the content and use areas of children's language in a first grade classroom. Videotape recordings were made of the children's conversational turns as they communicated in academic and nonacademic settings. Analysis of the data revealed differences in both language content and use between the two task settings.
