Abstract: Many general Alaskan histories tend to cast Aleuts as helpless victims to Russian and later American colonization of the Aleutians. After the initial violence of the mid-1700s, Aleuts have been stereotyped as lacking any power in society. However, Aleuts maintained varying amounts of power during both Russian and American rule. This study examines Aleut power during Russian rule (1741-1867) and American territorial rule, until the United States' entrance into World war II (1867-1941).
