Abstract: The Need for Material Gain: Brontë’s Criticism of Victorian Culture in Wuthering Heights is a dissertation of how Emily Brontë uses the characters of Wuthering Heights to critique the Victorian Era culture, and the negative effects the era has on society. The thesis provides support from Brontë’s biography, history of the nineteenth-century, other critics, and finally, quotes from the work itself.
