Library Responsibilities:
Preservation/Conservation Component
Develop and implement preservation initiatives designed to meet the conservation/preservation needs of Special Collections as well as plan, prioritize, and accomplish treatment goals
Manage in-house conservation laboratory and perform a wide variety of conservation treatments
Provide condition assessment for collections and develop treatment plans
Manage outsourcing of conservation treatments that cannot be performed in house
Supervise students and staff, evaluate training needs, develop training tools, and train staff in specialized conservation procedures, quality standards, and lab protocols
Participate in the evaluation of preservation technologies and in assessment of their appropriateness for Special Collections
Maintain a current awareness of conservation principles and practices as they apply to library and archival materials, and develop and test new treatment procedures and approaches to problem solving
Digital Component
Work closely with the Special Collections Team and Digital Initiatives Librarian to:
oversee the preparation for scanning of Special Collection items chosen for digitization
assure that materials digitized are handled properly
provide quality control for metadata
collaborate in the design and maintenance of web pages for digital collections
Collaborate with Special Collections to:
determine priorities for digitization
determine sources of funding
write grants; obtain copyright permissions
