Abstract: "The purpose of this research was to explore expatriate motherhood in Singapore. Forty-seven women completed a questionnaire, seven of whom participated in follow up focus group sessions. The participants provided information about their experiences as expatriate mothers in Singapore. Focus group findings show that there are supports and challenges unique to expatriate motherhood in Singapore. Supports include: the institutionalization of domestic help, the mild climate and safe city; and expatriate support networks. Challenges are: being a trailing spouse, husband's frequent travel, and trips back home. Findings further show expatriate mothers in Singapore, like many women in the United States, subscribe to an ideology of intensive mothering."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
