Abstract: This paper examines the influence of several biotic and abiotic variables on the spatial distribution of the Schweinitz's sunflower, a local endemic and endangered species. A variety of spatial, statistical, and analytical procedures were performed using a GIS and statistical software. Historical maps and primary data were also used to provide spatial context and evidence for the Piedmont prairie of which Schweinitz's sunflower is a remnant species. In general, the spatial distribution appears to be influenced by soil characteristics and areas with exposure to routine disturbance, most notably, along roadsides which receive regular right-of-way maintenance.
