Chuanhui Gu Ph.D.

Dr. Gu came to Appalachian in 2009 from a postdoctoral position at the Berkeley Water Center at UC Berkeley. Dr. Gu earned his PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia in 2007. His research focuses on the hydrological control on inorganic nitrogen loading to coastal streams. He also developed and conducted an experimental and modeling study to investigate the hillslope-scale nitrate reactive transport mechanisms across the multiple time scales from days to years. Dr. Gu is active in the Environmental Science Program as well as in the Geology Department. He is the winner of the 2012 Wachovia Award for Environmental Research.

Air-Stream Temperature Correlation In Forested And Urban Headwater Streams In The Southern Appalachians 2014 1026 Air temperature can be an effective predictor of stream temperature. However, little work has been done in studying urban impacts on air-stream relationships in groundwater-fed headwater streams in mountainous watersheds. We applied wavelet coherence...
Aqueous And Gaseous Nitrogen Losses Induced By Fertilizer Application 2009 1444 Anthropogenic input of reactive nitrogen to ecosystems has led to significant environmental consequences [Galloway et al., 2003; Aber et al., 1998]. Use of nitrogen fertilizers in agriculture has a direct impact on water (NO3) and atmospheric pollut...
Combined Effects Of Short Term Rainfall Patterns And Soil Texture On Soil Nitrogen Cycling -- A Modeling Analysis 2009 3111 Anthropogenic inputs of reactive nitrogen (N) to ecosystems have led to significant environmental consequences (Aber et al., 2003; Galloway et al., 2008). Alteration of the natural N cycle has a direct impact on water (NO3-) and atmospheric pollution...
Complexity In Microbial Metabolic Processes In Soil Nitrogen Modeling: A Case For Model Averaging 2010 1415 With increasing concerns over environmental problems caused by human disturbances, accurate and reliable predictions of nutrient cycling are essential for sustainable resource management practices. In the last few decades, much effort has been invest...
Effect Of Freshets On The Flux Of Groundwater Nitrate Through Streambed Sediments 2008 1646 The passage of a flood wave over sandy stream sediments can cause changes in the discharge of groundwater to the stream that range from a transient reduction in the discharge rate to a reversal of flow and temporary storage of stream water in the str...
The Effects Of Household Management Practices On The Global Warming Potential Of Urban Lawns 2015 5170 Urban residential lawns comprise the majority of intensely managed turfgrass systems, covering 1.9% of land in the continental United States (Milesi et al., 2005) and increasing at an annual rate of 800,000 ha (U.S. Depart. of Housing and Urban Devel...
Environmental Controls On Nitrogen And Sulfur Cycles In Surficial Aquatic Sediments 2012 1471 Enhanced anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) have disturbed their biogeochemical cycling in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The N and S cycles interact with one another through competition for labile forms of organic carbon betwee...
Hyporheic Exchange And Nutrient Uptake In A Forested And Urban Stream In The Southern Appalachians 2014 1593 The hyporheic exchange (HE) is defined as the interaction between stream water and groundwater, where the stream water passes back and forth between the active channel and subsurface flow paths (Runkel, 1998). The zone of this exchange is characteriz...
Influence Of Stream-Groundwater Interactions In The Streambed Sediments On NO3 Flux To A Low-Relief Coastal Stream 2008 1660 Water-saturated, organic-rich sediments immediately surrounding a stream channel can provide a protective buffer between streams and adjacent land-based activities by removing plant nutrients from shallow groundwater flowing through them, but the hyd...
A Mechanistic Treatment Of The Dominant Soil Nitrogen Cycling Processes: Model Development, Testing, And Application 2008 462 The broad impact of NO and N2O gas emissions on climate change are widely recognized [e.g., Mosier,1998; Vitousek et al., 1997], as are the effects of NO3 water contamination on human health [e.g., Kapoor and Viraraghavan, 1997] and eutrophication [...
Mudflat Soil Amendment By Sewage Sludge: Soil Physicochemical Properties, Perennial Ryegrass Growth, And Metal Uptake 2013 928 The fast pace of cropland loss in China is causing alarm over food security and China’s ability to remain self-reliant in crop production. Mudflats after organic amendment can be an important alternative cropland in China. Land application of sewage ...
Nitrate Reduction In Streambed Sediments: Effects Of Flow And Biogeochemical Kinetics 2007 1614 The effect of retention time on redox sequences along the hydrological flow path of groundwater discharging through low-relief coastal stream sediments and the subsequent impact on the fate of NO3 carried in the groundwater was examined in two inta...
Riparian Biogeochemical Hot Moments Induced By Stream Fluctuations 2012 1697 Hyporheic exchanges in riparian zones induced by stream stage fluctuations, referred to as bank storage, can influence contaminant transport and transformation when mixing of groundwater and surface waters with distinct chemical signatures occur, whi...
