Ishmael as Guide to the Reader in the Hunt for the Great White Whale

Abstract: In this paper, the author considers how, in "Moby Dick", Herman Melville uses the character of Ishmael to guide the reader by being a relatable narrator, drawing the reader in by balancing a certain level of transparency with a counteracting level of mystery.
