Abstract: Hypertension (HTN) is a chronic condition that is frequently the precursor to cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. This article reviews the current literature on the management of HTN in adults, including diagnosis, determination of treatment goals, implementation of treatment regimens, and differentiation between difficult-to-treat and truly resistant HTN. Information is summarized about how nurse practitioners can empower patients to use home blood pressure monitoring. The article incorporates discussion about new research in HTN management and provides insight into the forthcoming Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure report.
