Abstract: Extensive research has been done looking at the cognitive, behavioral, and social/emotionaleffects of pediatric cancer and the impact these effects have on students’ school performance.The existing literature stresses the importance of schools having a school reentry plan in placefor children when returning to school after treatment and/or extended stays in the hospital.However, several studies have found that, often, parents of students with cancer report that their child’s school did not have a reentry plan in place; or, that the plan was not an effective one. This study will examine parents’ perceptions of the accommodations North Carolina schools have provided to their children with cancer including the presence or absence of a reentry plan, if one is present, and any academic accommodations that are provided. Additionally, this study will gather information regarding parents’ perceptions of how helpful services offered by the school were to their child and what additional services they believe would have been helpful, and wish had been offered to their child as they transitioned back into the school setting.
