Abstract: This paper presents the empirical results from an extensive study of the use of elements of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) by enterprises in the US tooling and machining industry. Important managerial implications regarding the use of FMS technology in industrial settings are drawn from the lessons learned in the study.
