Abstract: It was the purpose of this study to investigate the compatibility, based upon the humanistic principles, of the goals of dance education and humanistic education. It was hypothesized that if such a compatibility exists, there would be significant implications for dance education in the public schools. A philosophical method of inquiry utilizing pertinent literature and research and an appropriate set of hypotheses and sub-hypotheses were applied to the topics of dance, dance education, education, humanistic education, and pedagogical implications. D. B. Gowin's "Structures of Knowledge Analysis" was the foundation for organizing the inquiry. The results of the inquiry suggested that there exists a concept which is basic to both dance education and humanistic education, and that concept is a belief in the total development of the student. The results of the inquiry also suggested that the ethos of dance education and humanistic education are comparable. Both dance education and humanistic education appear to value the development of the student's self-awareness, the exploration of his personal environment, and the process of education.
