Abstract: In the fall of 2005, Dr. Stuart J. Schleien and Kimberly D. Miller of the Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro embarked on an exciting journey. They were in search of the key elements necessary for providing inclusive recreation services, where participants with and without disabilities have access to all program opportunities offered by an agency. While experts in the field have provided a set of “promising practices” for inclusive recreation, there appear to be discrepancies between these practices and what is really occurring in the trenches. By investigating strategies used by agencies across the nation that provide exemplary inclusive services, they are identifying what it takes to succeed in accommodating participants with disabilities in existing programs.
