Abstract: Among the purposes, objectives, and functions of the Modern High School is the enrichment of the student's knowledge of cultural history and thought. By developing the understanding of history and the subsequent relation of this to the contemporary trends of our social system, the educator stimulates the student's maturation in the essential dimensions of a fruitful existence: depth of thought, breadth of understanding, and clearness of vision. An appreciation of the arts plays an integral part in this process. By studying a work of art within its social and historical setting, by bringing to life the great artistic geniuses of the past, both as men and as artists, and by supplying an understanding of their styles as peculiar products of their times, the student is provided the proper means for fulfilling the aspirations of our modern educational system.
