Abstract: 2019 University Libraries Undergraduate Research Award Winner---This paper focuses on the communications between slave trade merchants and the captains that they employ. All of the letters that were focused on in the paper were written between 1725 and 1800, and they are rich with information about not only where the slaves were purchased and sold and what type of people were most likely to be purchased as slaves, but also the treatment of the slaves aboard the ships. In this paper the letters of instruction to slave ship captains are closely analyzed and contextualized.
