Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the evolution of women's costumes in the following eight sports: archery, baseball-softball, basketball, bowling, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, tennis. Research involved the examination of primary sources such as rule books, clothing catalogs, women's magazines, periodicals, books and photographs as well as correspondence with officials of the national sports associations. The information indicated that sports costumes from 1875-1920 followed the fashion trends of the times but from the 1920's onward special costumes were developed. It has also been concluded that the nature of the game was the main factor affecting costume development.
