Abstract: It was the objective of this study to construct a historical narrative concerning the origin and development of the physical education program at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina. Winthrop, the South Carolina College for Women, was founded in 1886. Physical education has always been included in the college curriculum. The Department of Physical Education was formally established in 1910 and a professional preparation program was initiated in 1919. After materials related to the topic had been located and examined, eleven questions were formulated as a guide for further research. The questions were concerned with the establishment of the college, the origin of its physical education program, the beginning of the professional preparation program, the facilities occupied by the Department of Physical Education, the influence of national trends on the program, and outstanding persons in the history of the department. The material assembled in the process of answering these questions was synthesized into a narrative which provided a reconstruction of past events relating to the Department of Physical Education at Winthrop College.
