Abstract: The earliest recorded history of man reveals evidence of his need to communicate ideas and concepts. In order to express himself he used symbol- images, or pictures. All were original works of art, none of which could be reproduced. The audience was therefore limited. The development of the hand-cut woodblock (the first of the graphic arts) made possible the multi-original. For the first time artists could produce a number of duplicate originals possessing all the special qualities of the single original.
