Abstract: Philosophy today recognizes the need for all possible experiences and activities that may contribute to a continuous, well-rounded development of the individual pupil. Much has been done in this direction in recent years through an increase in the variety of activities. Almost every angle of the curriculum has been affected, but there seems as yet a neglect in some phases of the school program. Investigations and research in the field of children's literature have brought to light the fact there are many abuses in the teaching poetry. Children are still being required to memorize, dissect, and study poems, which they have no choice in selecting.
