Abstract: Entrepreneurs worked vigorously to make North Carolina a major furniture producing state. The Northern states had dominated the industry until the Southern states began to gain a foothold. North Carolina furniture could not develop until it had formed a marketing center in the state to promote North Carolina furniture. The Southern Furniture Exposition was established in High Point for that purpose, and it was instrumental in boosting the state into a major producer of furniture. Today the state is one of the nation's largest furniture manufacturers. Perhaps as much as sixty-five percent of all American furniture is produced within 125 miles of High Point. Furniture is now the third largest industry in North Carolina.
