Abstract: This study developed and tested a model of stress and burnout in dual-role teacher-coaches. Following Smith's (1986) cognitive-affective model of stress and burnout In athletics, this Investigation examined: (a) the contribution of the stress appraisal components of perceived stress, coaching Issues (teacher-coach stress), and coaching problems (teacher-coach role conflict) to the prediction of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment), (b) the contribution of environmental/situational variables (social support, gender, and years of experience) to the prediction of stress appraisal, and (c) the direct contribution of the environmental/situational variables to the prediction of burnout.
