Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate the attitudes of paraprofessional trainees toward mental illness, work in community mental health, and their attitudes toward professionals in the area. Related to these aims, questions were also raised concerning the interaction of Self Concept with attitudes; attitude change and attitude stability. A pilot study with 27 paraprofessional trainees from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University developed a research instrument for assessing the attitudes toward work and professionals in community mental health and attempted to change the Self Concept of the paraprofessional trainees by 100 clock hours of practicum experiences.
