Abstract: In recent years, a considerable body of literature has developed around the issue of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. DeCharms (1968) attacked the notion of additivity with respect to these processes and suggested that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation may in fact be interactive. DeCharms' suggestion was that extrinsic reward may actually result in a decrease in intrinsic task interest.
