Abstract: Willa Cather's 1915 novel "The Song of the Lark" describes a woman who defies the provinciality of her birthplace to work her way to the top where her talent can be recognized as a true artist. In this paper, the author compares the novel's narrative to Cather's own life, and examines the gender issues raised by the novel, especially in how it challenged the patriarchal narratives of the time.
