Abstract: Since many academic institutions have one or more specialty libraries outside of the main library – music libraries being one of the most common – it is often necessary for the staff in each location to work together. The music resource center at UNC Pembroke functions as a small “satellite” branch of the main library and shares the same management software system. The catalog librarian in the main library collaborates closely with the music librarian to ensure that all new acquisitions are catalogued into the shared ILS system correctly and efficiently; he also updates any materials in the system that may have incorrect data or information. It is important for specialty libraries on university campuses to have some relationship with the main library, even if they function separately, and having a liaison makes this easier. Without our library liaison, the music library would have less accountability and support; our students would have far less access.
