Abstract: As an artist I frequently disclose memories shared with my mother, aunts and friends to explore the identities of African American women; specifically their relationship to their hair and skin complexion post slavery. My videos, sculptures, and photography explore multilayered issues, such as-what are ways African American women use hair manipulation as a mask to hide their true identities? And, what are the effects of colorism in present day society?
